Investing in yourself…

This year I re-joined my old gym. My old gym is not like a normal corporate gym, it’s called Evolution Project and it specialises in transformations and strength training and it’s lovely to be back. Last summer I joined a traditional corporate gym and I am still with them, but I wanted something a little extra with nutritional support and proper strength training so that’s why I’m now with both. Why am I telling you this story in my latest CIPR Inside update? Because this process made me think about professional membership and development…

I join a gym to better myself. I want to get fit, be strong and healthy and like many people this time of year, lose a little weight. I have my own motivation for developing myself. I explore the gym timetable to see what I like the look of and I try different things – spinning, gym workouts, Body Jam etc. but essentially, I find what works for me and I don’t expect the gym to tell me what to do.

At Evolution Project, I get something extra, I get advice on nutrition, tailored personal training and more but it comes with a higher price tag – one I’m willing to pay to get the results and maintain the lifestyle I want in 2018.

I’m sure you can see where this is going, and my thinking is simply that it’s my own motivation for development that drives me. I get out what I put in. I could join the gym and never go and then I’m just wasting money but if I pay and I use all the facilities and spend time getting to know the offer then I know how to use it to achieve my goals and I learn what is right for me. We all have different ambitions, expectations and needs but it’s up to us to find the right one for us as an individual.

Rachel Miller commented that she is a member of several membership bodies. I’m a member of CIPR and just recently joined the Institute of Directors. I’m also planning to explore a membership with the Institute of Internal Communications because they all help me achieve the goals I have set this year – much like the combination of my corporate gym and Evolution Project help me achieve the goals for my health.

So, use this month to think about what you want to do in 2018. How do you want to feel? What do you want to achieve this year? While it may feel like there are too many professional bodies to choose from, I’m sure there is either one or a combination that can help you achieve your goals.
