This year we’re set to hear how internal communication and employee engagement professionals are closing the gap in their organisations.
We have a great line up of speakers who are going to share their experiences with us. Here we’ll share a little intro to each of them over the coming days before the event on 4 October.
Dr Barbara Gibson
Dr Barbara Gibson is a consultant, researcher and lecturer focused on intercultural communication and global business.
Her recently completed doctoral research explored “Intercultural Competencies Needed by Global CEOs.” With more than 25 years’ experience as a business communication professional, she has worked with companies worldwide, and is a past international chair of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
She has recently served as chair of CIPR International (a sectoral group of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations), and immediate past-president of SIETAR UK (the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research). She is a lecturer in intercultural business communication for Birkbeck – University of London, as well as programme director for the MA in Intercultural Communication for Business and Professions.

Curtis James – Fieldworker
Curtis runs a company called Fieldwork and they use ethnographic methods to study working life for companies that need some independent beginners eyes and ears on what’s happening in their business. They recently worked on a 4 month study at organic food company Abel & Cole, and he will talk a little about some of the things they have been doing to capture the unique cultural stories that exist across a multi location organisation of 650 people and why this kind of work is important for companies.
Emma Savage MCIPR
Emma has over 15 years’ experience in communications including employee engagement, event management, media relations, PR and digital. As well as local government, she has worked in communications/marketing roles in the private sector as well as the Cabinet Office.
After graduating from Cardiff University in 2014 Emily joined the council’s communications team as a trainee. Since then her time has mainly consisted of events, internal communications, and all things digital! She has recently been given a new role within the organisation as Digital Communications Officer.
Helen helps public service organisations with impactful digital engagement projects and campaigns, and advises on how to boost staff professional development and better collaboration with the people that organisations serve.
She also runs a series of lively in-house workshops on social media and communications.
She’s won quite a few awards for her work, such as a social media awards for use of Yammer with Foster carers, but she doesn’t like to talk too much about that.
Kate is Internal Communication Manager in Nationwide Building Society’s award winning communications team. She has worked in a number of roles for Nationwide and picked up a number of CIPR Inside awards earlier this year with the team. She is now responsible for the communication of Nationwide’s people strategy and all things HR.
A huge advocate of the power of positive thinking, she tweets @kes1981 on a wide range of topics, not just communications.
Dr Kevin Ruck
Dr Kevin Ruck is the co-founder of PR Academy and he designed the Internal Communication Certificate and Diploma qualifications for CIPR and is the PR Academy course leader for these programmes.
He is also the editor and co-author of the text book ‘Exploring Internal Communication’ which was written for internal communication practitioners and students who are interested in developing a career in Internal Communications. His research interests include enterprise social networking, communication leadership and organisational engagement.

Leanne Taylor-Flett (MCIPR) is Employee Communication and Engagement Manager at AXA Business Insurance and founder of Just Flair communication consultancy.
Leanne is an experienced, award-winning communications specialist and with experience in creative, corporate and employee communications across retail, financial services and the public sector.
As a founder of Just Flair, Leanne helps businesses create amazing messages that deliver tangible results. She was the proud recipient of this year’s CIPR #insidestory Award for her work with AXA.
Nick Howard leads Edelman’s European employee engagement business. He advises business leaders on how to get the best out of their people, how to manage big and challenging change projects, and how to attract, retain and develop top talent. Before joining Edelman in 2011, Nick was Retail Communications Director for Lloyds Banking Group, where he led the successful communication of Europe’s biggest financial services integration – Lloyds TSB and HBOS.
Nick’s work has won several awards including a New York Film Festival World Medal and Institute of Internal Communication Best Change Communication class winner. Nick has also been shortlisted as Melcrum’s Communication Leader of the Year.
Rob Brown is the founding partner at Rule 5, a PR agency based in MediaCityUK. He is also the current President of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).
In 2008 he wrote the best-selling ‘Public Relations and the Social Web’ book which explores new ways for PR communicators to work in the rapidly changing digital environment.
Rob is listed in the PR Week Powerbook 2008-2016 and the Global Powerbook 2016. He was awarded for Outstanding Contribution to Social Media in the SomeComms Awards in 2011 and he was also presented with the Stephen Tallents Medal by the CIPR in 2013 for service to the industry.
He is a member of the CIPR Executive Board 2010-2016 and was the founding chair of the CIPR social media panel.
